Wikipedia, defines to breathe, "as a verb that refers to the process of inhaling and exhaling air to facilitate gas exchange in the lungs. It is essential for life as it allows the body to take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide."
Besides keeping us alive, the act of breathing has many benefits:
detoxification and cellular regeneration
relieves anxiety, worry and emotional issues
reduces musculskeletal tension and stiffness
provides mental clarity and lessons brain fog
proper breathing "massages" our organs with the movement of the diaphragm
strengthens our immune system and improves the quality of our blood
strengthens our lungs

Avoid shallow breathing and rather enjoy a good belly breath of air as you move up to fill your lungs and upper chest...savour the oxygen and then gently release or exhale as you progress down squeezing out the last of the stale air within your stomach.
